Japanese maple leaves are changing color just in time to match the vibrant orange bellies of our neighborhood’s winter residents—the Daurian redstarts.
Latin name: Phoenicurus auroreus | Japanese Name: ジョウビタキ (joubitaki)
Size: 14-15cm
Diet: Daurian redstarts eat insects, seeds, and berries.
Habitat: You’ll find them in various forests, gardens, and urban parks.
Location: Daurian redstarts can be found in various parts of East Asia throughout the year, but they arrive in Japan in late October and leave by April.
It’s been hard to make space for drawing and birdwatching trips this past month, but we were excited to notice these vibrant migratory birds move into our neighborhood for the winter. Are you noticing any new birds appearing in your corner of the earth (if the seasons are also changing)?
